Ghent. The 124th year of the Royal Opera of Ghent (the fourth under the direction of Karel Locufier) opened with Saint-Saens's Samson et Dalila. In appearance as well as vocally Rita Gorr was a magnificent Delilah: Jan Verbeeck was a brilliant Samson. Jean Laffont played the role of the High Priest impeccably. The conductor was Jef Nachtergaele.

Orff's Die Kluge, presented together with a cautiously purified version of ('atulli Carmina, provided good entertainment — thanks to the neat collabora Then followed Verdi's Un Ball in Maschera and 11 Trovatore. The Bulgarian singers Maria Bohachek, as Amelia and Leonora, and Todor Kostov, as Riccardo and Manrico, were an agreeable surprise. Thais, by Massenet, had Maria Petrignani in the title-role and Lucien Cattin as Athanael. In Madama Butterfly we heard Amelia Benvenuti in splendid voice as Butterfly. The young tenor Pierre Lanni showed that the role of Pinkerton can be made interesting, if one settles down into the part. The last performance of the month was Manon Lescaut, with Paulette Chalanda in the title-role and Henri Bohrer as the Chevalier des Griex. RAF MAEYENS Ghent. 1 Puritani has been given here in Italian and in the purest bel canto style with the collaboration of two Italian visitors — Anna Macciacanti, with a beautiful voice and a command of high notes, and Giani Iaia, who (on November 22) launched one doubtful high D in the final duet followed by another one of great beauty and full tone. But one does not need to be Italian to know what bel canto is— as was demonstrated by the Belgian baritone Gilbert Dubuc (who came back from Germany, where he is making his career) and the Dutch bass Guus Hoekman. There was a production in traditional style of Karel Locufier, administrator of the opera here, and Jef Nachtergaele was the able conductor. NESTOR EEMANS
